The Influence of Semantic Incongruency on Vocabulary Acquisition of Kurdish Learners of English Language

چکیده

This study investigates the influence of semantic incongruency on vocabulary acquisition Kurdish learners English and different factors involved in resolving such incongruency. It also examines whether level language proficiency is key facilitating learner understanding this phenomenon. To these ends, a mixed method approach that features quantitative qualitative data collection was adopted, for which two groups were tested interviewed. Findings indicate hinders because it causes types lexical errors. Learners found semantically incongruent words conceptually refer to domains easier understand than those referring one domain. Furthermore, knowledge collocational behavior equivalent L3 can help successfully use vocabulary. The evidence derived suggests attention should be given how meanings are ascribed languages limitations presented by tendency their L1 as they L2 Examining issues vital increasing awareness differences between L2. Semantically congruent, collocation, better incorporated into teaching testing materials through inclusion syllabi designed instruction.
